Wits University RESEARCH PROJECT OFFICER Job Description:


Requirements: Applicants must be eligible for and suitable to be accepted and registered into a Masters by Dissertation degree in the School of Public Health at the University of Witwatersrand, beginning January 2023, and have a minimum of an honours (four-year) degree in public health, economics, statistics, public policy, or a related field, or an MBBCh or other professional health degree. Demonstration of a strong background in quantitative skills necessary. Previous research experience and experience working with primary data are desirable. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with a range of different people and across disciplines are also important. A successful applicant will be required to register for a Masters by Dissertation at the School of Public Health at Wits. Applicants with qualifications obtained outside of South Africa need to have their degrees certified through SAQA.

Term of service: Fellows are appointed for 12-month terms. Renewal for a second and possibly a third year will be at the discretion of HE2RO and dependent on the progress of the Fellow as well as available funding. Fellowships will begin in January of 2023.

Location: One applicant will be based at the HE2RO offices in Johannesburg, Gauteng, one applicant will be based at the African Health Research Institute (AHRI) in Durban and/or Somkhele in KwaZulu-Natal and one applicant will be based at the Desmond Tutu Health Foundation offices in Cape Town, Western Cape. Some travel to study sites and/or other parts of South Africa may be required.

Compensation: Fellows will receive a stipend which is expected to be sufficient to pay for housing, board, transport to work, health insurance and sundries. The stipend for 2023 will be R25,000/month. Fellows must pay for their own health insurance/medical aid or show proof of active health insurance (required) and arrange their own travel and accommodation. Fellows relocating to the respective appointment office (i.e. to another part of South Africa from where they are currently) will receive a one-time travel allowance to help defray basic travel costs. Registration/tuition fees and research costs will be covered by the EXPAND grant.
