Job Advert Summary
PURPOSE:

• To plan and secure Business Unit environmental authorisations and support compliance to Environmental policies, procedures and environmental regulations and reduce environmental impact of operations.

MAJOR CHALLENGES:

• Time delays associated with environmental authorisations.

• Impact of non-compliance on business including reputational damage and environmental liabilities.

• Compliance to different and complex environmental legislation.

• Lack of awareness.

• Litigation due to environmental impacts.

Minimum Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
• BSc (Hons) Environmental Science (Essential/Minimum)
• Diploma Project Management (Recommended/Desirable)
• Management Development Programme (Recommended/Desirable)

EXPERIENCE:

6-8 years Relevant Environmental Management experience (Essential/Minimum) Operational

REQUIREMENTS:
• Psychometric Assessment (Essential/Minimum) (To be conducted by Exxaro)
• Certificate of Fitness (Essential/Minimum) (To be conducted by Exxaro)
• SA Council for Natural Scientific Prof (Essential/Minimum)
• Member of Professional Body (Recommended/Desirable)

Duties & Responsibilities
Compliance, Governance and Assurance

• Drive and monitor environmental and sustainability compliance Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) for the Business Units (Bu’s)
• Ensure roles and responsibilities are communicated and clarified
• Ensure implementation of environmental management standards and environmental management systems through site specific procedures
• Support BU to develop policies, procedures, standards and guidelines to better enable environmental compliance
• Perform evaluation of discipline-specific standards, principles, policies and practices to enable planning, design and implementation of outcomes that support environmental compliance strategy
• Plan, coordinate and conduct Level 2 environmental audits i.e. BU compliance with respect to licenses and permits
• Support coordination and execution of Level 3 internal / external audits
• Ensure environmental management services are provided to the business unit
• Manage environmental monitoring and reporting processes, procedures and systems

Customer, Stakeholder and Client Relationship Management

• Share relevant information with stakeholders to ensure that environmental objectives are understood, supported and implemented
• Support consultation with stakeholders regarding environmental compliance
• Maintain good relationships with stakeholders
• Understand stakeholder needs and provide solutions
• Ensure stakeholder queries and complaints are promptly and adequately addressed
• Continuously endeavour to improve service delivery
• Ensure stakeholder satisfaction is maintained in accordance with the business strategy

Database Management

• Ensure environmental reporting in line with permits and/or group procedures/policies and standards
• Perform data analysis and interpretation
• Review non-compliance corrective action plans and provide support and advice
• Provide environmental operational compliance requirements to the business

Functional Management

• Plan and secure environmental permits and share related information
• Ensure adherence to environmental permits and licenses
• Raise awareness on compliance requirements for various legislation and applicable authorisations
• Manage information and data related to compliance to environmental authorisations
• Coordinate implementation of Environmental policy/procedures and standards and license requirements to comply with legislation
• Identify and drive corrective actions to non-compliances to minimise environmental impact
• Develop and implement emergency preparedness and response for environmental incidents
• Ensure that environmental inspections are conducted
• Review all projects/developments to identify applicable environmental authorisations that will be required

Internal Business Processes

• Provide technical advice and input into best practice models of environmental authorisations and compliance thereof
• Perform technical reviews of environmental management systems, policies, standards and procedures
• Drive environmental management continuous improvement projects and initiatives
• Pursue exchange and preservation of information within group to facilitate effective environmental knowledge management
• Optimise environmental compliance costs
• Cost environmental liabilities and provide inputs towards the environmental rehabilitation trust fund requirements

• Maintain and ensure a healthy environment, safe operations and practices, ensuring compliance with all applicable Safety Health and Environmental (SHE) policies and procedures in line with set standards
